The Southwest Zone of Door County’s snowmobile trail system will remain closed, regardless of snowfall from the current storm, according to a March 15 announcement. The closure is due to standing water and unfrozen swamps in the area.
This decision affects all trails west of County Road M and west of the south half of the Ahnapee State Trail to the Door County line. Officials have emphasized that these conditions make it unsafe for trail use and that riding on closed trails can result in citations and fines. Residents are urged to respect both private and public property during this period.
While outdoor activities are impacted by weather-related closures, local schools continue their operations. The top three schools with the highest enrollment in Door County for the 2023-24 school year were Southern Door Elementary School with 467 students, Sturgeon Bay High School with 402 students, and Southern Door High School with 315 students, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
Demographic data shows that white students made up 82.6% (2,674) of the student body in Door County during the 2023-24 school year, a slight decrease from 83.6% (2,724) in the previous year as reported by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Hispanic students represented the second largest group at 10% (324), while multiracial students accounted for 5.5% (178), making them the third largest group among county schools according to state data. Black students comprised just over one percent of enrollment during this period as reported by state officials.
Trail users are reminded that respecting closures helps protect natural resources and prevents damage to both public lands and private property. Updates on trail conditions will be provided as weather patterns change.
